ahhhh- nats section!
i think i blabbed on ... its really longwinded
.. let me kno if it exceeds the limit of not making sense-ness
Hooper and Gale, as you are aware, is a young law firm that is seeking an ident for their newly established office in the Docklands. They want to create an ident with a contemporary and dynamic feel. What we have strived to achieve is a design theme, that can be utilized across a wide range of media assets, which also is highly recognizable, has a rememberable effect and communicates to potential clients that they are a trustworthy, reliable and determined team.
The logo or logotype design is one of the most important visual assets a company has. It is what distinguishes and makes a company recognizable to the public. A logo has the ability to create and stimulate ideas and feelings upon first sight. As designers we wanted a sense of trust and reliability to be brought to the forefront of the publics mind. Of course, we also needed to consider their design brief, an important aspect of which was the contemporary and dynamic feel .
We came up with 3 variations for the logotype and a single type design. These concepts are simple, clean and convey a sense of stability and efficiency through the uncomplicated composition. The logotype graphics (gryphon and herald shield) while conventional and traditional in terms of associated connotations- middle evil time- are also non dating and have sense of professionalism and establishment.
Fonts used are variations of the __________type face, and are strong stable serif types which give a sense of strength and clarity due the of clean, simple nature of the font. Of these design we opted for the text only based logo, with the rationale that, despite being a new office, there were still viable links to the fathering firm that were beneficial to their company, and that the inclusion of a logo might negatively severe ties the client might want to maintain. The all-caps is a conscious choice as it has a stronger impression than its lowercase counterpart.
We want the elements that we designed for their ident to be transitional across a range of different medias, including print based mediums (letter heads, business cards, folders etc.), website, motion-graphics and in house presentations. We opted for a minimalist design that is once again clean and simple, giving a sense of straightforwardness, strength, and efficiency. And in regards with their design specifications - contemporary and dynamic- we kept information and design elements separate, non cluttered, by utilizing negative space in order to achieve a stylish and professional look.
The colour scheme that runs through the design includes a rich purple and array of pale blues, with purple being the primary or focal colour. Purple was selected as it is a regal colour, associate with royalty, trust and strength. In accordance with research form University of Illinois the royal purple reflects a companies values emphasizing confidentiality, understanding and trust. Other connotations of the colour are security, speed, and high-technology. It is an appropriate strategic design choice as the attribute of the colour are well suited for a successful Intellectual Property Company.
This design scheme is most notable in the website and print productions. Another element of the design is the use of a series of photographic images, not of the lawyers team or offices, but images that captivate and instigate a firm belief that Hooper and Gale will deliver unfailingly on the companies professional promise.

• It brings excitement to the field of Intellectual Property Law by using sleek/fast design and animation to make the subject matter more appealing in a traditionally boring environment.
• The corporate feel of the website, is then translated into the motion graphic following the same design style, with a fast, dynamic pace to keep the viewer interested, and potential clients to choose Hooper & Gale above other competitors.
WEBSITE blabber
See you kids tomorrow!
In addition to the re-branding of Hooper and Gale, we felt that we should create a website that would reflect the firm’s new vibrant image but retain the corporate foundations.
Initial designs of the website were quite simple and mimicked the traditional websites of other law firms. As you can see, everything is quite minimalist, simple and straightforward in this design. However, we felt that it did not resonate with the dynamism of the 'new' Hooper and Gale. The redesign of the website preserves the simplicity of a traditional navigation menu but adds a modern touch. The photos in flash menu allows Hooper and Gale to exhibit their new office locations and iterate their fresh image.
The logo and colour scheme are quite prominent on the site, to give a sense of consistency across all Hooper and Gale's promotional media. The royal purple reflects the companies values like confidentiality, understanding and trust. The light blue gives it that modern touch.
Site architecture is very clear and easily accessible... simple. Everything is laid out so its easily readable because of the wide range of audience that could be viewing the site. There's enough white space to make it easy to scan pages. The simple navigation makes it user friendly so people can get the information they want as quickly and as easily as possible. We felt the site has quite a lot of information, and we kept it as simple as possible. We didnt want anything to flashy - just a site that gets the job done >> wholly reflects the firms own approaches.
The built-in contact form on the site makes it particularly easy to get into contact with the firm... online support. There is also an added function of changing languages of the site. With such diverse cultures in Melbourne, Hooper and Gale want to be able to help as many people in melbourne...
With society constantly changing, Hooper and Gales quarterly (?) newsletter keeps clients and any one else interested, up-to-date with the latest developments in not only the firm but Intellectual Properly law as well.

Intellectual Property Protection
Most corporations, small to medium enterprises and individuals involved in commerce in the 21st century will be faced with issues involving the protection of intellectual property. This may consist of methods unique to your business, client lists, branding or the product itself. In many businesses intellectual property represents the most important asset yet receives little attention. The fact that Intellectual Property is intangible means that many people are unaware of their rights and unfortunately due to this neglect Intellectual property enters the public domain unprotected. The use of someone else's intellectual property amounts to theft hence it is imperative that you protect it like you would any form of real or personal property e.g. your home, car, investment property, business premises, plant and equipment, etc.
There are various strategies available to protect intellectual property so your intellectual capital is protected. Too often we hear from clients involved in sales intensive industries that disgruntled or unscrupulous employees have walked out the door with sensitive information such as client lists, production methods or even software. At LAC Lawyers we posses the knowledge and experience to assist you to secure your Intellectual Property and therefore your market share. No one can afford to allow their competitors to utilise their intellectual property giving them an unfair market advantage.
Examples of such strategies include:
- Copyright
- Confidentiality and Non Disclosure Agreements
- Licensing
- Manufacturing Agreements
- Trademark Protection - the application of trademarks and advice on opposition or infringement actions.
- LAC Lawyers also has access to specialist advice should you require information on patents and patent applications.
It has been our experience that with the explosion in e-Commerce over the past decade, the potential for intellectual property theft has increased exponentially. Websites are effectively online brochures and represent a potential vulnerability when protecting your intellectual property. Ideas, images, information, and branding among other things are all conveyed on websites and are subject to infringement unless properly protected. Many commercial transactions are now performed over the internet and the potential for sensitive information to be broadcast is increasingly likely. LAC Lawyers can help you protect your Intellectual Property on the internet and pursue anybody who infringes or steals it.
Apart from sales protection we also encourage clients to adopt pre-emptive measures to protect their Intellectual Property before problems arise. What most clients forget is that intellectual property rights often have unexpected business consequences. There is a general misconception that because you are the registered owner of a business name or company that this is protection against all the world. It is to the extent that someone else does not hold a trademark over that name or the words being used. The owner of the trademark has many options available at law including injunctive relief in equity. The impact of this is that everything that carries these words may have to be destroyed including all advertising, branding, marketing, printing and other business materials.
Wherever possible the best way to protect a business name is to register it as a trademark as it gives the owner the right to exclude others from using it. in some cases descriptive words may also be trademarked e.g. "have a good day have a Kit Kat". Although this is possible there are certain restrictions which apply to to wide an application of these words. Irrespective where two parties use the same words it often gets back to a contest of prior use. Should either party hold a registered trademark then other legislation may come into operation including the Trade Practices Act or Fair Trading Acts of each state. Make sure you obtain proper legal advice and adopt a holistic approach in this area otherwise you may become involved in some very expensive litigation. Do not be penny wise and pound foolish; obtain proper informed legal advice as it will save you a lot of money in the end.
We can advise you on an effective protection policy for your intellectual property, how to audit these business assets and how to secure this through effective brand strategy. We can advise on how to deal with your employees, third parties, corporate partners or contractors so that you are placed in the best possible position.
